Hansons are delighted to present a collection of artworks from the late Jeff Stultiens RP.
Coming to auction for the first time, paintings by Stultiens already reside in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery as well as several other important national collections. 
Taught by R.B Kitaj at Camberwell in the 1960s, abstract design and colour within figurative art remained major preoccupations throughout his painting life. Stultiens was a gifted portrait painter, always striving to convey the inner qualities of a person as much as their outward appearance, even with notable sitters such as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II or His Eminence Cardinal Basil Hume. It is also evident that even his commissioned portraits are as concerned with the abstract qualities of painting as with finding a likeness.
However, Stultiens’ personal work, which formed the bulk of his output, went far beyond ordinary portraiture. He used the human figure, and his rich understanding of the greatest painters of the past and present, as tools to explore the world of visual experience; to explore the lives of ordinary people; to make political statements; and to create exciting compositions of light, colour and shape. These preoccupations with abstract qualities also enrich and inform his photographic work.
